Bettman Future of Pride Night | Teams Opt Out | NHL Diversity & Inclusion Policy

The NHL’s Vancouver Canucks have announced that before their game against the Calgary Flames on Friday night, the team will feature a drag show as part of Pride night.

The drag show will include Vancouver-based performers Mx.Bukuru, Carrie Oki Doki, Xanax, and Jerrilynn Spears, as part of “Pride Party on the Plaza,” the team’s website states. The team adds that the players will wear “Pride themed warmup jerseys designed by a local artist” and that “drag show performers featured on the Plaza will join us inside at the Stanley Park Brewing activation in Section 111.”

“The opportunity to celebrate the 2SLGBTQIA+ community is very important to our entire organization,” said Michael Doyle, president of the team’s entertainment and business operations. “Pride night and all the incredible activities that highlight this evening, is special for a number of reasons. Besides raising awareness and understanding, it also lets our fan base know that everyone is welcome here at Rogers Arena. Our club believes strongly in diversity and inclusion, and we look forward to celebrating these core values with our community.”

“2SLGBTQIA+ represents two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual and additional sexual orientations and gender identities,” the team’s website explains.

Meanwhile, in the wake of several NHL players refusing to wear pride-themed attire, the league is reportedly considering shelving Pride night events at its games. [Click Here For More]

Last week, two brothers who are teammates on the NHL’s Florida Panthers refused to wear a pride-themed sweater during the team’s warmup skate, citing their religious beliefs. Eric and Marc Staal joined San Jose Sharks goalie James Reimer and Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov, who had also refused to take part in warmups with pride-themed jerseys.

On Monday, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman seemingly suggested the league might jettison their pride events, telling CTV News, “This is the first time we’ve experienced that, and I think it’s something that we’re going to have to evaluate in the offseason. This is one issue where players for a variety of reasons may not feel comfortable wearing the uniform as a form of endorsement.”

“But I think that’s become more of a distraction now, because the substance of what our teams and we have been doing and stand for is really being pushed to the side for what is a handful of players basically have made personal decisions, and you have to respect that as well,” he continued.

Gary Bettman Says NHL Will Evaluate Pride Nights

This season, several NHL players have chosen to remain silent in protest against the league’s LGBTQ+ Pride Night celebrations. Players such as Ivan ProvorovJames ReimerMarc StaalEric Staal, and Ilya Lyubushkin have declined to wear the Pride Night-themed warmup jerseys intended to promote inclusivity and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

Although players are entitled to support or oppose the issue individually, these protests are affecting the league’s message of inclusiveness. When players opt-out, the focus shifts from inclusivity and support for sexual orientation and gender identity to discrimination and intolerance, particularly towards the transgender community. Consequently, the NHL is now reportedly considering discontinuing these celebrations.

“This is the first time we’ve experienced that, and I think it’s something that we’re going to have to evaluate in the offseason,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman told CTV News on Monday in Ottawa.

“This is one issue where players for a variety of reasons may not feel comfortable wearing the uniform as a form of endorsement,” he said.

“But I think that’s become more of a distraction now because the substance of what our teams and we have been doing and stand for is really being pushed to the side for what is a handful of players basically have made personal decisions, and you have to respect that as well.”

These protests have created a significant distraction from the broader message that the NHL is attempting to support, leading to questions about whether the Pride Night events are worthwhile. If Pride Night merely offers a platform for players and fans to express negative opinions and engage in bad faith arguments, should it continue?

Gary Bettman Makes A Big Statement About The Future Of Pride Night

After a number of players around the NHL have chosen not to participate in their team’s Pride Night festivities of virtue signaling this season, league commissioner Gary Bettman could cancel them moving forward.

Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov was the first player this season to decide not to participate in his team’s Pride Night due to his religious beliefs. He elected not to wear a rainbow-themed jersey during warmups, which caused the media to lose its collective mind.

ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski labeled anyone who respected Provorov’s decision a “homophobe” while some no-name anchor in Canada attacked all religious people.

Other NHL players including brothers Marc and Eric Staal of the Florida Panthers have since refused to participate in Pride Night while the Minnesota Wild, New York Islanders, and New York Rangers decided not to wear previously planned Pride-themed jerseys.

With players and organizations deciding it’s not right to force people into participating in Pride Night activities, Bettman says Pride Nights as a whole need to be reevaluated this offseason.

“This is the first time we’ve experienced that, and I think it’s something that we’re going to have to evaluate in the offseason,” Bettman told CTV News.

“This is one issue where players for a variety of reasons may not feel comfortable wearing the uniform as a form of endorsement,” he said, according to Habs Fanatics.

“But I think that’s become more of a distraction now because the substance of what our teams and we have been doing and stand for is really being pushed to the side for what is a handful of players basically have made personal decisions, and you have to respect that as well.”

The easy solution here is to have players and teams choose whether or not they want to participate in Pride Nights, but personal choice only matters to the tolerable left when it fits their woke agenda.

The vast majority of hockey fans and sports fans, in general, do not care about sexuality during pre-game warmups or during an actual game. Getting rid of Pride Nights would only anger the incredibly loud minority, so it will be interesting to see if Bettman and the NHL will face that criticism or continue down the woke path they’ve already started on.

Although the aforementioned teams opted out of wearing “Pride” jerseys, they each hosted “Pride Night” games and reaffirmed their support for the “LGBTQIA+ community” in some form.

The Wild issued a statement ahead of their second annual “Pride Night” that their “organization is proud to continue [their] support for the LGBTQIA+ community.” Some players also put rainbow-colored tape on their sticks during warmup. The pre-game ceremony also featured a guest appearance from “Minnesota hockey icon” Jack Jablonski wearing a Pride-themed jersey, according to The Athletic.

The Rangers had also announced before the game that it would wear “Pride” jerseys for warm-up. However, the team ended up wearing their standard uniforms instead.

“Our organization respects the LGBTQ+ community and we are proud to bring attention to important local community organizations as part of another great Pride Night,” the Rangers said. “In keeping with our organization’s core values, we support everyone’s individual right to respectfully express their beliefs.”
